REDEAR SUNFISH (Lepomis microlophus)

OTHER NAMES: Shellcracker, stump knocker

ADULT FISH IDENTIFICATION: A deep sided fish with a black ear flap rimmed in red or orange. Uniquely modified teeth in the throat allow them to crack snail and small clam shells.

DIET: Snails and other mollusks are preferred, but diet also consists of crayfish, insects, insect larvae, leeches and fathead minnows.

SPAWNING: In the Midwest Redear Sunfish spawn May through late-summer when water temperatures are 72-85ĚŠ F.  Nests are constructed in 1’ to 4’ of water on firm sand and gravel bottoms.  Redear Sunfish are colony spawners and will hybridize with regular and hybrid Bluegills.

FISHING TIPS/USES: Live baits such as red worms, wax worms and fathead minnows work best fished near the bottom of the pond. Snails are part of the life cycle in swimmers itch, so Redear Sunfish are a required fish to stock in ponds where people will be swimming. They also help control Yellow and White Grubs, which are fish parasites, so we recommend stocking them in all ponds. Redear Sunfish will not peck at swimmers like Bluegills will.

STOCKING RATE: New ponds 200-3,000 per acre, established ponds 200-500 per acre.
