Hybrid Striped Bass
HYBRID STRIPED BASS (Morone saxatilis x Morone chrysops)
OTHER NAMES: Striper, Wiper.
ADULT FISH IDENTIFICATION: Broken black horizontal lines run along the sides and back of this deep-bodied, silver fish. Appearance is a mixture of striped and white bass, and they have a smaller mouth than a Largemouth Bass.
DIET: Insects, bluegill, and other small fish i.e. golden shiners. They grow quickly when supplementally fed a good quality commercial fish food, and their growth rate can be over 2 pounds per year.
SPAWNING: Does not usually naturally occur in ponds, fish removed must be re-stocked every year or two years.
FISHING TIPS: Crank baits and live baits such as nightcrawlers and baitfish are effective for hybrid striped bass. Since they are a schooling fish, bites often come fast and furious. They inhabit the more open water in the middle of the pond.
