Golden Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
OTHER NAMES: Palomino Trout
IDENTIFICATION: Orangish Yellow body with a darker reddish horizontal stripe in the middle of the body, sometimes reddish gill plates. At the time of stocking, trout generally weigh 1 to 2 lbs. each.
DIET: Insects, small fish and commercial fish food. When fed a good commercial fish food like Optimal, their growth rates can be 1+ ounce for every 2 ounces of food consumed.
SPAWNING: Natural reproduction in ponds throughout the Midwest typically does not occur. Fish should be stocked in early Fall and harvested no later than the end of June. Golden rainbow trout will not generally survive in waters greater than 72̊° F.
FISHING TIPS: Fishing with spoons and jigs tipped with worms, fish eggs and fathead minnows are effective methods for catching Golden rainbow trout.
STOCKING RATE: Up to 100# per acre
These are feed trained fish and do very well in a pond with a feeding program.
