Bullfrog Tadpole
BULLFROG TADPOLES (Lithobates catesbeianus)
OTHER NAMES: Polliwog
IDENTIFICATION: Bullfrog Tadpoles hatch from eggs with gills and a long, flat tail. As the tadpole matures over a two year span, the second year front and hind legs will develop as the tail is reduced in size as the tadpole metamorphs to an adult frog.
DIET: Bullfrog tadpoles are considered herbivores, feeding mainly on algae and other vegetation. Adult bullfrogs are carnivores, and will eat anything that they can fit in their mouths, including other frogs.
SPAWNING: Adult bullfrogs lay eggs in the spring. Seven to ten days after spawning, the eggs hatch and the tadpoles wiggle free.
FISHING TIPS/USE: Once mature, bullfrog tadpoles can be harvested and consumed using cane poles and frog gigs. They are rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Bullfrogs and Bullfrog tadpoles are eaten by many predator fish and Herons.
